Touring in a van with the band, smelly, sleeping in that van, running out of money, car troubles, drugs, alcoholism, groupies, and more are what really happens on the road. After all that there’s also the constant fear of not being good enough, or not living up to the potential. It takes a specific person and a true love of music to deal with all of that, and in Viena and the Fantomes, Viena (Dakota Fanning) learns just that.

Being with the band is in of itself a cliche yet it remains this weirdly intriguing fantasy that transitions from generation to generation. It’s a topic that dominates the narrative themes and structures of “Viena and The Fantomes.” Set in a world of pure punk rock fantasy, this all too common tale of the young roadie suddenly spirals outside of the usual safe boundaries.

Nisha Ganatra’s “The High Note,” has a Tracee Ellis Ross problem, meaning that there isn’t enough of her in the movie. The script, procured by Flora Greeson, focuses chiefly on Dakota Johnson, which isn’t a bummer trade at all: Her deceptively breezy charm has enough strength to hold up even the hollowest pictures, no matter how many shades of grey they’re brushed with.
