A Greater Manchester Police officer has been sacked after he hit a man over the head with his baton during a 'disturbance' on Deansgate Locks.Police constable Philip Ellis was found to have used 'excessive force' and breached standards of professional behaviour, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said.The incident in October 2016 left a 23-year-old man needing hospital treatment for his injuries.The IOPC launched an investigation that concluded in March 2017 and evidence was handed

Greater Manchester Police is receiving a huge surge in calls related to mental health as a result of the pandemic, it has emerged. On average, 60 officers a day are dealing with calls from people struggling with mental health - double the normal amount.Bev Hughes, the Deputy Mayor, says GMP has set up a fortnightly gold command meeting with partners including those in mental health service to try and address the problem.
