A dad stabbed his former partner to death then took his own life because he was 'devastated' after they broke up, an inquest has heard.
Daniel Patten, 31, killed his ex Regan Tierney at the home they once shared, then contacted her grandad to confess what he had done and ask him to collect their two children.
Patten then called police after the Walkden incident and said that he was going to hang himself, He was found critically injured by officers and passed away in hospital a few days later, Wales Online reports.
An inquest heard how Mr Patten had been left "heartbroken" and "destroyed" after Miss Tierney, 27, ended their ten-year-long relationship.
He had just discovered that Regan had a new relationship with another man and in the early hours of June 5, 2019, Mr Patten drove to Regan's home, let himself in and stabbed her to death.
After Mr Patten had made the call to Miss Tierney's grandad, her father David, rushed to the house where he found his daughter fatally injured in her bedroom. When police arrived, Mr Patten was found hanged in the garage. He died in hospital as a result of a catastrophic brain injury two days later.
Daniel's dad, Neil Patten, told the inquest Daniel had never threatened to harm himself and usually 'wouldn't hurt a fly.' Mr Patten described his son as an "amazing" father, who was always very hands on with his and Regan's two children. But when Miss Tierney reportedly ended their relationship and asked him to move out, Daniel was 'absolutely heartbroken,' Mr Patten told the court.
