She's a part of the fae community, who are believed to all possess some kind of magic—and because of that, they're victims of a group of religious zealots called Red Paladins. After the Paladins invade Nimue's village, she's given a sword by her mother (who's on the brink of death) and told to bring it to the wizard Merlin.
