Cruise ship rescues 24 people from a sinking boat off Florida: report

Two women attending a Florida street rally to support President Trump were injured when someone shot pellets at them from a car, authorities said Friday.  Fort Lauderdale Police and Fire Rescue crews responded to a street corner around 6:15 p.m.

Florida federal prosecutors have announced the capture of a fugitive Connecticut rapist after he went on the lam 44 years ago and who they say assumed the identity of a 5-year-old who died in 1945. Douglas Bennett, 76, a former drama department instructor at Mount Holyoke College, the prestigious private liberal arts college for women, was taken into custody in Clearwater, Fla., where he had been living for years.

A Florida man shot and killed his pregnant wife at home, thinking she was a late-night invader, according to local reports. The unidentified man claimed he heard a noise around 1 a.m., grabbed his handgun and fired a shot at someone in the dark hallway.

Heavy rains and flooding linger across Central America on Thursday as a weakened Tropical Depression Eta drifts over the region, but the storm system may eventually impact Florida by next week.  The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said the storm now has maximum sustained winds of 30 mph as it moves over Honduras, bringing downpours and "life-threatening flooding" across the region.

President Trump is projected to win Florida's 29 electoral votes thanks in part to Cuban American voters in the traditionally Democratic stronghold Miami-Dade County, which has a heavily Hispanic population. While Trump did not win Miami-Dade County, he came much closer to Democratic nominee Joe Biden's numbers (53%-46%) than he did when running against Hillary Clinton in 2016 (63%-34%).That translated to a 3.4% win in the state in 2020 compared to his narrow 1.2% margin in 2016.

Floridians experienced a record-breaking first day of early voting in anticipation of the upcoming November election, with over 3.1 million votes cast.  More than 366,000 of those ballots were cast in-person on the first day, according to statistics from the Florida Division of Elections.

A new TV commercial by President Trump’s reelection campaign touts that the president is “the clear choice” for seniors, who are a key voting bloc in many of the battleground states that will decide the winner of the presidential election. The ads running on the airwaves in Florida and other crucial swing states as the president courts voters 65 and older on Friday when he campaigns in Fort Myers in southwest Florida.

At least 13 people were injured in a Florida boat explosion on Thursday, according to reports.  The Fort Lauderdale boat caught fire on the New River around 2 p.m. Inside the boat were 21 people, some of whom were missing in the immediate aftermath.

Florida Republicans have cut the voter registration gap with Democrats to a historic low, giving the GOP a boost during early voting.  Politico reported Thursday night that the difference in registration numbers for voters in the battleground state is the lowest in at least three decades. Republicans now trail Democrats by just 134,242 registered voters, down from 327,483 in 2016.  Four years ago, President Trump won the Sunshine State by fewer than 113,000 votes.

A Florida sheriff's deputy helped save the life of a high school student this week who was having a seizure in the cafeteria.   School resource Deputy Pedro Colon received an alert that a student was having a medical emergency during lunch and rushed to his aid.  Body camera footage of the incident shows the student face down seizing on the ground.  The deputy immediately began performing CPR on the student and after several minutes, the student was alert and sitting up.
