A British couple were stranded in storm-hit Dubai and faced a whooping 12-day wait for a flight back. Alison Shah, 60, and her partner, Richard Kay, 52, decided to take matters into their own hands by hopping multiple flights and taxis on a tiresome quest that took them three days to reach home after their vacation trip to Bangkok and Thailand turned into a travel nightmare.
Despite her nightmare ordeal Alison, an emergency control operator from Manchester, was focussed on getting back to work. They first caught a five-hour flight from Dubai to Istanbul, then grabbed another brief flight to Dalaman before taking another strenuous five-hour journey back home.
The Manchester Evening News reports Alison said: "We were originally due to get back on April 17 and we didn't get back until the 21st. I have never experienced anything like this."
Her ordeal has left such a deep impact, she admits: "I told Richard that I never want to leave the country again which is sad as I love travelling. We paid a lot of money for the holiday and it has ended in a nightmare."
Alison and Richard were en route to Manchester from Thailand via Dubai. Despite being aware of severe storms in Dubai, the couple received no communication from the airline advising them not to proceed to the airport.
Alison stated: "I was waiting for information from the airline to say 'don't come to the airport'. We didn't get any so we got on our scheduled flight."
She explained their plane circled above Dubai for an hour and a half before landing, after which they had a few hours to wait for their connecting flight to Manchester. Their flight to Manchester was scheduled to leave Dubai at 3am. However, due to the adverse weather conditions, it kept getting postponed.

Spotify’s premium plans combining music and audiobooks will mean a lower mechanical royalty rate for songwriters on those plans, the company has confirmed, although it claims that earnings for creators will continue to rise.“Spotify is on track to pay publishers and societies more in 2024 than in 2023. As our industry partners are aware, changes in our product portfolio mean that we are paying out in different ways based on terms agreed to by both streaming services and publishers,” the statement reads. “Multiple DSPs have long paid a lower rate for bundles versus a stand-alone music subscription, and our approach is consistent.” The final sentence is in reference to plans offered by Amazon — which offers its music streaming as part of its Prime service — Apple and others.
