Controversy Over Further Safer-At-Home Order In L.A. County As Daily Cases Hit All-Time High

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is pleading with Los Angeles County residents to adhere to the COVID-19 health protocols as the department confirmed 70 new deaths and 11,476 new cases Saturday. The bottom-line message is to stay home.

"The Restaurant Closure Order is an abuse of the Department’s emergency powers, is not grounded in science, evidence, or logic, and should be adjudicated to be unenforceable as a matter of law," wrote Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James C.

The Los Angeles Police Department received criticism from Democratic lawmakers and the Black Lives Matter group, who argued that officers who used batons against a crowd outside Mayor Eric Garcetti’s home used excessive force and infringed on protesters' First Amendment rights. Several videos posted to social media showed officers in riot helmets Sunday morning using batons in a skirmish outside Getty House, the official residence of the mayor of Los Angeles located in Windsor Square.

A regional state stay-at-home order will go into effect for Southern California and San Joaquin Valley at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday amid rising COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.

The coronavirus continues to take hold over Los Angeles county as Public Health officials confirmed a total of 8,949 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday alone.
