The company is officially rebranding from CollegeHumor to Dropout, the name of the ad-free, subscription streaming platform it launched in 2018. CollegeHumor was founded in 1999 by Josh Abramson and Ricky Van Veen — back in the days before the streaming revolution — and gained traction as a free, ad-supported comedy website.
Barry Diller’s IAC/InterActiveCorp acquired CollegeHumor in 2006. Then in January 2020, IAC laid off more than 100 staffers at CollegeHumor and sold a majority stake in CH Media, parent company of CollegeHumor and Dropout to Sam Reich (pictured above), who was the company’s chief creative officer at the time. In a video about the rebranding (watch below), Reich, now the company’s CEO, says he wasn’t sure Dropout would make it to its second year.
