Holiday season is around the corner and while many people are excited for a jaunt abroad, others are left worrying about how to ensure the plants they’ve carefully cared for will fare with no one to water them. One TikTok user shared a clever hack using household items that keeps plants watered without someone needing to check up on them.TikTok user Justine Shannon – who aptly has a page called @selfcareplants – shared her hack that she nicknamed “the wick method”.
Justine’s way of keeping plants watered uses a wick, or string, and a large saucepan of water. She put thick pieces of string in a large pan of water and then attached each string to a plant’s soil.
Justine noted that to make sure the method works, the saucepan needs to be kept at a higher level than the plant itself. The method can be used on more than one plant, users just need to add extra string to the water. The string acts similarly to a straw with the water being sucked up straight into the plant’s soil. Justine showed how well the method worked when she returned from a 12 day holiday and her plants were still thriving.
The first video detailing the method that Justine posted racked up a massive 2.3 million views with almost 220,000 likes. This isn’t the first time the social media website shared a life-changing hack. Earlier users claimed that we’ve been washing bed sheets all wrong and were able to keep them fresh using just a few home essentials.
Instead of using plain old detergent and fabric softener, the cleaning account suggests creating your own bespoke washing blend using items you probably already have at home. The video, shared by content creator Refined Living, advises using vinegar and bicarb as well as your usual detergent. The clip recommends
