Christopher Biggins has revealed his close friend Paul O’Grady was still smoking the week he died. The national treasure died ‘unexpectedly but peacefully’ on March 28 aged 67, his husband Andrew Portasio confirmed. Biggins, 74, also reiterated that O’Grady died ‘peacefully’ and shared fond memories of their past holidays with the late Cilla Black.
‘I know for a fact he was still smoking last week. What a wonderful way to go — peacefully in your sleep,’ Biggins said over the weekend. Biggins also recalled a holiday he and O’Grady had ‘about 15 years ago’ when they stayed with Black, who died in 2015 at the age of 72, in Spain.
According to Biggins, O’Grady had been told not to ‘drink or smoke too much’ because of pre-existing heart problems. But Biggins said that didn’t stop the star enjoying a cigarette or two in his room. Actor Biggins told The Sun that he went to check on O’Grady after Black said she smelled smoke, and despite O’Grady’s room being filled with smoke, he adamantly denied he’d had a cigarette.
‘I went into his bedroom and said, “Paul, you’re smoking”. He looked at me and said, “No I’m not”. ‘I said to him, “You must think we’re idiots, the room’s full of smoke”.
In minutes we were both lying on the floor laughing hysterically. ’Addressing his husband’s death last week, Portasio said in a statement: ‘It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening. ‘We ask, at this difficult time, that whilst you celebrate his life you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss.
