Chris Evans is sharing his thoughts on his Captain America character, his initial reluctance to take on the role and why he’s not ready to return to the MCU anytime soon.
In an interview with GQ for its October issue, Evans says he agrees somewhat with Quentin Tarantino’s comments last year that Marvel characters are the stars and not the actor portraying them. “Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is, you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters, but they’re not movie stars. Captain America is the star,” Tarantino said in a November 2022 interview with Mediaite, and Evans agrees.
“That was the beauty of working on Marvel films. You never really had to be front and center,” Evans said. “Even in your own films sometimes. Quentin Tarantino said it recently and I was like, you know, he’s right. The character is the star. You’re there, but you don’t feel the burden of it.”
He also revealed his reluctance to initially take on the role. “I was really apprehensive about taking the role initially,” he says. At the time, he was nearly 30. “I remember in my late 20s having a real shift in how I felt on set, how I felt promoting films: a little more anxiety, a little more uncertainty. You always end up questioning, Is this what I should be doing?”
Evans left Los Angeles when he finished 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, the seventh of seven films under which he was contractually obligated to portray Captain America. He hasn’t ruled out returning for another Marvel film, but says it likely won’t happen soon.
“I’ll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience,” Evans said. But I’m also very precious with it. It’s something that I am very proud of. And like I said, sometimes I can’t

Chris Evans has admitted that he feared accepting the role of Captain America would make him “deeply unhappy”.Speaking to GQ, the actor discussed the initial trepidation he felt when considering whether to accept the role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).“The pros were that I’d be able to take care of my family forever,” he said. “The cons were that I would become deeply, deeply unhappy with fame and loss of control.”Evans played the superhero character in a total of seven films in the MCU, starting with 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and concluding with 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.“I love playing that role,” he continued.

Next year (depending on when these WGA and SAG strikes get worked out), we’re expected to see Anthony Mackie finally take on the role of Captain America in a Marvel Studios film. Years after he is given the shield in “Avengers: Endgame” and after he accepts the role in “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,” Mackie is finally ready to fully lead the MCU in “Captain America: Brave New World.” That said, there are still plenty of Marvel fans already anxiously awaiting the return of the previous Captain, Chris Evans.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Chris Evans said in a new GQ profile that he agrees to an extent with Quentin Tarantino’s recent claim that Marvel killed the movie star. Evans somewhat agrees.

Netflix’s Pain Hustlers is a largely fictionalized tale of a very real world, and rather eye-opening, business: selling an easy fix for what ails us, even if it leads to addiction and death. Although the names have been changed, the characters invented although inspired for some by actual cases and people, the original source material is all too real. Based on a New York Times article of the same name by Evan Hughes and then developed as Hughes was turning his research into the book, “The Hard Sell: Crime And Punishment At An Opioid Start-Up”, screenwriter Wells Tower has fashioned a riveting, if disturbing scenario brought to life by director David Yates who was looking for a less fantastical tale to tell other than the Harry Potter movies he was directing. He found it, and also his way into what might be quite a shocking expose of just how far of a grift some in big pharma business and the medical community may go in order to make a buck at the expense of our own well being and health. It has its World Premiere tonight at the Toronto Film Festival.
