By So, you’re choosing the bear, right?A new question sweeping social media is being met with nearly complete unanimity among women, and confusion or anger by men.
And while this may seem silly, it’s actually rather profound in demonstrating how little men understand about the lived experience of women in the world. It all has to do with a simple choice: Are you choosing the bear or the man?Confused? Let me explain, in this edition of A question floating around social media asks: Picture yourself alone and unarmed in the woods.
Would you choose to encounter a bear or a man? Nearly all women (and I truly have not been able to find one woman who disagrees, but let’s just say nearly all) choose the bear. It’s unclear where exactly this debate originated, though some are crediting the viral news account , which posted a video of two hosts debating the topic last week.
However, they seem to reference a conversation already in progress, so the first to posit this question is still a mystery.Still, the video from the account helped the debate go viral, where it soon spread all over the app.
The question isn’t getting people talking because it’s a silly question, but rather the opposite.
Because in just a few days time, it’s exposed a pretty wide disconnect between women and men on the app.For women, the answer is a no-brainer.
A strange man is undeniably a threat.
I don’t think there is a woman-identifying person alive who wouldn’t be gripped with fear to turn around in the middle of a lonely expanse of woods to see a man, standing there, with nowhere to run.
It’s literally the plot of every other thriller novel, and happens on countless episodes of Dateline or CSI.

It feels like it’s been months or even years that we’ve all known that Timothée Chalamet would star in a Blue De Chanel advertisement directed by Martin Scorsese (“Killers Of The Flower Moon”). The pair, who conducted some interviews last year, particularly one for GQ, are clearly mutual admirers of one another.
French director Alexandre Aja has been in the horror game for a long time; over two decades, in fact. His 2003 breakout “High Tension” cemented him as an up-and-comer in the genre, and after moving stateside to work in Hollywood, he furthered his career with remakes like “The Hills Have Eyes” and “Piranha.” But Aja hasn’t had a real hit since 2019’s “Crawl,” a taut survivalist thriller B-movie that revived the director’s career.
“So much torque!”
Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic Religion, Karl Marx said, is the opiate of the masses. Today, he would likely say that the opiate of the masses is fame — the desire for it, the things you have to do to get it, the fragmentary nature of it (the old “15 minutes” is now, in many cases, more like 15 seconds), and everything it’s supposed to bring you. The new fame, the lusty fickle kind bred by social media, is at the center of “Wild Diamond,” a startlingly bold and true French drama that premiered today at Cannes.
Late in the highly entertaining and enlightening new HBO Documentary Films movie on the life and career of Faye Dunaway we learn how much this iconic star just loves coming to the Cannes Film Festival. “Just about every year,” she says not only for the world’s best films but also to immerse herself in all aspects of filmmaking. In fact I have seen her many times just soaking it all up cinematically both here in Cannes and Telluride to name two fests. So it seems appropriate that the Cannes Classics section would be the place for the World Premiere Wednesday night (in the presence of Dunaway as the French like to call it) of this terrific new docu in which Dunaway pretty much tells it all straight about her life, loves, desires, ambitions, movies, co-stars, depression, controversies, family, and hopes for the future in a profession she says she can’t imagine not working in.

She still has never worn Chanel on a carpet.
