Chiefs fans are used to the cold, but not this kind of cold.
Temperatures for Saturday night’s AFC Wild Card matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins could be the coldest ever in which either team has played. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Warning for portions of Kansas, and the temperature at Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium is expected to dip at kickoff time to -2 degrees, with the wind chill dropping it to -21.
That’s having an impact on ticket prices.
Yesterday, the Kansas City Star published a story noting that resale ticket prices for the cheapest seats had fallen to $50 a game. That’s unheard of for a playoff game, especially one featuring the defending Super Bowl champions at home.
Today, as the weather forecast worsened, ticket prices plunged to $34 and, as of this moment, to just $30 on Ticketmaster. To put that in perspective, parking at Arrowhead for the game is $55.
By comparison, the cheapest seats for the Rams-Lions playoff game Sunday night in Detroit, where it will be a comparatively balmy 11 degrees with a windchill of -1, are about $518.
Per Pro Football Reference, the coldest game ever played at Arrowhead was on December 18, 1983, when it was one degree with -15 degrees windchill as the Chiefs took on the Denver Broncos.
The coldest game in NFL history was the 1967 NFL Championship between the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys. The temperature? It was -13 with a wind chill of -48.
