“Challengers” follows the rivalry between tennis pros Art Donaldson (Mike Faist) and Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor), who are vicious competitors on and off the court as they pine for the love tennis prodigy turned coach Tashi (Zendaya). Guadagnino’s steamy sports drama has been met with much praise from critics and fans alike, making it a likely contender come awards season. Variety’s Peter Debruge deemed “Challengers” a “critic’s pick,” calling the film “the steamiest (and funniest) sports-centric love triangle since ‘Bull Durham.'” The film currently sits at 89% on Rotten Tomatoes with a B+ CinemaScore.
“Challengers” opened with a $15 million first-place finish at the domestic box office, and has since soared to upwards of $40 million. But with a price tag of $55 million, the film still has a ways to go to recoup its production budget. Zendaya, who recently posed on the cover of Variety with her “Challengers” co-stars, has had a monumental 2024, emerging as one of Hollywood’s hottest young talents.
In March, she starred as Chani in “Dune: Part 2,” which is the highest-grossing film of 2024 at over $700 million worldwide. Another recorded-breaking performance from Zendaya was as MJ in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which was released in 2021 and became the seventh highest-grossing movie of all time. Rent/purchase “Challengers” on Prime Video or Apple TV+ starting today.

FX on Hulu’s The Bear will dish up an all-new season to kick off summer. Season 2 already elevated the show with its numerous guest stars as well as the transition of the family sandwich shop into a fine dining establishment. Season 1 swept the first of two Emmys ceremonies this year, with the second hoping to follow in those footsteps.
Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic Of all the films premiering at Cannes this year, “The Most Precious of Cargoes” is both an anomaly (the first animated feature to compete for the Palme d’Or since “Persepolis” in 2007) and the most likely to become a classic. Blending the heavy lines of early-20th-century woodcuts with the gentle pastels of watercolor painting, “The Artist” director Michel Hazanavicius finds a poignant way to address not only the horrors of the Holocaust, but the kinds of kindness that combatted it, crafting an indelible parable destined to be watched and shared by generations to come.

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic Straying from the hotheaded “Taxi Driver” style that has dominated much of his career, Paul Schrader pays ruminative and respectful tribute to his late friend, novelist Russell Banks, who gave the writer-director the raw material for one of his best films, “Affliction” — and now, for one of his best films in years. Adapted from Banks’ “Foregone” (and given the title the author told Schrader he wanted for the book), “Oh, Canada” presents a dying artist’s final testimony as a multifaceted film-within-a-film, honoring Banks while also revealing so many of Schrader’s own thoughts on mortality.
