Car dealership Lookers is set to axe 1,500 jobs and close 12 more showrooms.
The Altrincham-based group - founded in Manchester city centre in 1908 - said the move would cut costs by up to £50 million a year.
The dealership cited the coronavirus pandemic crisis and a tough car market.
Car showrooms have only just reopened for customers as lockdown restrictions were eased on Monday.
