Captain Sir Tom Moore's family lose appeal and must knock down 'unauthorised' spa pool

The family of Captain Sir Tom Moore have lost their appeal against an order to knock down an 'unauthorised' spa pool at their home, and have now been told to get rid of the building within three months.
Sir Tom's daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore and her husband, Colin, applied for permission to build an L-shaped building in the grounds of their property in Bedfordshire in 2021, as part of the Captain Tom Foundation. It was initially given the green light, but the planning authority refused a subsequent application in 2022 for a larger C-shaped building containing a spa pool.
After Central Bedfordshire Council issued an enforcement notice in July requesting the family to demolish the 'unauthorised' building, Captain Sir Tom's daughter launched an appeal, which has now been refused by the Planning Inspectorate.

The couple have now been told that they must knock down the spa pool block within three months. Inspector Diane Fleming's written decision said: “I accept that the appellant’s intentions are laudable; however, it has not been demonstrated in any detail how all of this would work in practice.
“In the absence of any substantiated information, I find the suggested public benefit would therefore not outweigh the great weight to be given to the harm to the heritage asset.”
Ms Fleming’s decision said the “scale and massing” of the building had resulted in harm to the grade II-listed Old Rectory – the family’s home. The inspector concluded that “the actual removal of the building should take no more than three months” after
