The Cannes Film Festival has confirmed that it will announce the Official Selection for its 76th edition on April 13 in Paris.
This year’s festival will run from May 16-27. Cannes President Iris Knobloch and Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate, will preside over the official selection press conference.
Earlier this week, the festival confirmed that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will get its world premiere on May 18 at the festival. Harrison Ford and director James Mangold will be among those to tread the red carpet to a John Williams soundtrack, the festival and Disney said on Monday. The movie will then release in theaters June 28 in France and June 30 in the U.S.
The festival will also host a career tribute to Ford 15 years after it debuted Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The Disney and Lucasfilm production is produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, and Simon Emanuel, with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas serving as executive producers. Williams, who has scored each Indy adventure since the original Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, has again composed the score.
Martin Scorsese’s latest, Killers of the Flower Moon, is also set for a Croisette debut. The festival confirmed last month that the pic will world premiere on the Croisette on Saturday, May 20, in the Grand Théâtre Lumière. Based on David Grann’s best-selling book and written for the screen by Eric Roth and Scorsese, Killers of the Flower Moon is set in 1920s Oklahoma and depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the “Reign of Terror.”

Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent French director Catherine Corsini was meant to be the seventh female director in competition at the 72nd edition of Cannes with her film “Le Retour” (The Return). But her competition slot is on hold for now after news broke about several alleged inappropriate incidents during filming. The night before the press conference on April 13, Cannes chief Thierry Fremaux confirmed to the director that she would have a competition slot, but shortly before the start of the announcement, the festival’s administration board decided to hold off on including the title as part of the lineup. The delay came after the board discovered that Corsini was allegedly being accused of harassment by crew members, while other members of the crew had been allegedly been accused of inappropriate acts against two female actors, according to French reports. Fremaux told Variety the “administration board wished to gather more information about the situation around the film before taking a decision on whether to include the film in its Official Selection.”

Of course, the main lineup typically features the biggest names in film and this year is no different, with a new ‘Indiana Jones’ film as well as new films from directors like Martin Scorsese and Wes Anderson.

That’s the idea.”He continued: “It’s a movie that both connects to the worlds we know, but is also far enough away from it that I think there’s a lot of opportunities to tell a story freely, also…and not be so incredibly tied in by the knots and different story strands that are already in place.”A post shared by Empire Magazine (@empiremagazine) The second new Star Wars film will be directed by The Mandalorian co-creator Dave Filoni.
More news is emerging from Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023, underway in London, including the announcement that three new “Star Wars” movies are in the pipeline.

The Cannes Film Festival announces its Official Selections for its 76th edition next Thursday, but fans already know about some movies premiering on the Croisette this year. Martin Scorsese‘s “Killers Of The Flower Moon” will be at the festival, for instance, as will James Mangold‘s “Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny.” And the opening film for Cannes 2023 has already been confirmed, too: Maïwenn‘s “Jeanne du Barry,” which also serves as the onscreen return for Johnny Depp.
The Cannes Film Festival is giving a boost to Johnny Depp‘s attempted film industry comeback. Organizers announced today that Maïwenn‘s historical drama “Jeanne du Barry,” which features Depp as King Louis XV, will open the 76th edition of the famed festival on Tuesday, May 16.
Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Maïwenn’s historical drama, “Jeanne du Barry,” starring Johnny Depp as Louis XV, is slated to world premiere on opening night of the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, Variety has learned. The movie marks Depp’s acting comeback after a three-year hiatus following his long legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard which culminated in a defamation trial won by Depp in December. Maïwenn’s sixth feature, the period movie revolves around the tumultuous relationship of the French king Louis XV and his lover, Jeanne du Barry (played by Maiwenn), whom he brought into the Versailles Palace to live near him even though she wasn’t a noble. Louis XV, who was nicknamed “the beloved,” ultimately died as an unpopular king after being accused of corruption. He reigned for 59 years, the longest in the history of France after that of Louis XIV. Depp barely spoke French before the start of filming so it will be interesting to see how he pulls it off without an accent.
