More than 8,300 rail fare dodgers were prosecuted in the courts last year, train operator Northern has revealed.
Now bosses have issued a fresh warning, as a new campaign gets underway.
Northern, which runs services across the region and is the second largest train operator in the UK, said the 'vast majority' of passengers follow the rules and use its website, app or a ticket machine before they travel.
