California Covid-19 Update: Friday Is By Far The Deadliest Day Of Pandemic In State

In the past week there has been a lot of good news for virus-ridden California. The graph charting the number of new cases in the state looks like a downward staircase, from 42,655 on Thursday to 30,699 on Saturday to 22,403 on Wednesday. That’s a near 50% drop in less than a week.

California Governor Gavin Newsom flew down to Los Angeles on Friday for the opening of a mass vaccination site at Dodger Stadium. Before Newsom stepped to the podium, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti introduced him as “not just California’s governor, but America’s governor.”

Bruce Willis, 65, visited a Rite Aid in Los Angeles, CA on Jan. 10 and refused to wear a mask to protect himself and other from the coronavirus pandemic, according to Page Six. The actor was apparently wearing a bandanna around his neck during the outing and got people in the store upset when he didn’t lift it and put it over his mouth after being asked to. The situation led to him walking out of the store without making a purchase, the outlet further reported.

“This very clearly is the latest surge for the winter holidays and New Year’s.” That was Los Angeles Public Health Chief Science Officer Dr. Paul Simon on Friday. “It’s likely to continue over the next week or two. We do expect these numbers continue to be high over the next couple weeks,” he said.

On Monday, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced what should have been good news: The state’s number of new daily cases dropped to 29,633. That’s down more than 20,000 since the state hit its all-time high of 53,711 on December 15 and substantially lower than the 7-day average of about 37,000.

The adoptive father of two young California boys who went missing last week said they were playing on a back porch when he went to gather firewood just before their disappearance.  Trezol West and his wife, Jacqueline West, reported 3-year-old Orson and 4-year-old Orrin West missing on Dec. 21 from their California City home.Trezol West told KGET-TV that the boys were playing around 5 p.m.

A coronavirus patient is accused of beating his 82-year-old hospital roommate to death with an oxygen tank in Lancaster, Calif., last week because he was upset with his Catholic prayers, according to authorities. The victim shared a two-person room at Antelope Valley Hospital with the suspect, 37-year-old Jesse Martinez.They were both undergoing treatment for COVID-19, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

“We are experiencing a modest decline in the rate of growth over the past few days,” said California Governor Gavin Newsom as he addressed the state of the state’s Covid-19 numbers on Wednesday. He then called the 39,069 new cases reported “a modest indication of some possible sign of some good news.” The governor also announced that the 7-day test positivity rate had “declined slightly” from 13.3% to 12.6%

Almost exactly two weeks after California Governor Gavin Newsom announced what became a new lockdown for most of the state’s population, the daily number of new cases has fallen for five successive days. Granted, those numbers are dropping from an all-time new daily case high for the state — or any state, for that matter — of 53,711 announced last Wednesday.
