Trams on the Bury Metrolink line will remain suspended today after the heatwave's soaring temperatures caused damage to the overhead lines.
No services will run between Bury and Victoria stations throughout Tuesday as the mercury is set to climb even higher. Bosses said there is 'too great a risk of passengers becoming stranded on trams'.
The line was first suspended yesterday as temperatures soared to a sweltering 35C in our region. The 'excessive' temperatures caused damage to the overhead power lines on the network.
On the Transport for Greater Manchester website, Metrolink said: "Following the damage caused to the overhead line from excessive temperatures on Monday, there will be no tram service operating between Bury and Victoria on Tuesday 19 July. While we will be working through the night, we cannot guarantee the service given the higher temperatures forecast.
"There is also too great a risk of passengers becoming stranded on trams in what are expected to be even hotter temperatures. Metrolink tickets and passes will be accepted on the 97, 98, 135, 524 bus services."
There are also minor delays on the Altrincham line this morning due to the heatwave, according to the TfGM website. Services travelling in both directions between Deansgate-Castlefield and Altrincham are affected.
Trams will continue to every 12 minutes on other lines, with Metrolink saying: "This is to ensure that we can operate a reliable and frequent service during the hot weather. We will operate as many double services as possible to provide additional capacity and space on board."
Advice has also been issued for people not to travel by rail, with several Manchester services cancelled yesterday and into today affecting trains to Sheffield,
