Elections for Bury Council are less than a month away with 17 of the 51 seats in the borough’s wards up for grabs in the poll. Residents are voting to elect a representative in each of the borough’s 17 wards on polling day on Thursday, May 2.
A total of 60 candidates in total are standing for councillor positions in each of the wards which make up the town. The council is currently Labour controlled as they have 31 of the 51 seats.
The Conservatives have 11 seats, with Radcliffe First having seven members with the remaining two councillors independent. The elections will take place on Thursday, May 2, from 7am until 10pm along with similar votes across the country.
Candidates from the Conservatives, Labour will contest every ward with the new political party Bury Independents fighting for nine seats. The Liberal Democrats will field four candidates, as will the Green Party while The Workers Party of Britain will be fighting to win in three wards.
Other parties fielding candidates are the English Democrats – “Putting England First!” in two wards with Reform also fielding two contenders. There are also two Independents standing.
The deadline to apply for a postal vote in this year’s local elections is 5pm on Wednesday, April 17. Residents have until midnight on Tuesday, April 16 to make sure they are on the electoral register and therefore entitled to vote.
