It’s been reported by various media outlets that founder of Ladysmith Black Mambazo Joseph Shabalala has passed away in Pretoria aged 78-years-old.
Joseph formed the iconic group in the 60s. They went on to become one of the biggest selling groups on the continent; they’ve also won five Grammy awards.
Joseph suffered complications in 2012 following a back operation and has been wheelchair-bound since. Details regarding the cause of his death are still a bit sketchy at this point.

Joseph Shabalala, the singer who founded Ladysmith Black Mambazo and led the South African choral group to world renown, died Tuesday morning (February 11) at a hospital in Pretoria, the BBC and The Associated Press report. He had long struggled with ill health and retired from touring in 2014, but continued to make occasional public appearances. Shabalala was 78 years old.
