Manchester United remain deadlocked with Everton in negotiations for Jarrad Branthwiate as Ineos try to complete their first signing since taking over football operations at Old Trafford.
A bid of £35m plus £8m in add-ons has been rejected by the Toffees, who continue to insist on a £70m fee for their 21-year-old central defender. United view this as unrealistic and are waiting to see if Everton lower their demands before going back in for their top defensive target.
Everton hope the sale of winger Lewis Dobbin to Aston Villa could ease their own financial fair play headaches before the latest accounting deadline of June 30 for the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability rules, although that is likely to still leave them close to the limit.

United have alternative targets in central defence and continue to be linked with 18-year-old Lille defender Leny Yoro. The teenager is likely to be on the move this summer and he is one of a number of young central defenders United have looked at as alternatives to Branthwaite.
A striker is the other priority for United in this window and Joshua Zirkzee is a target thanks a €40m release clause in his Bologna contract. The 23-year-old was a late call-up to the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024 but the presence of a clause in his contract makes it a relatively simple deal to do.
United have also been credit with an interest in another Lille player, striker Jonathan David. The 24-year-old has a year left on his contract and isn't going to sign a new deal, so he is expected to be sold by the Ligue 1 side this summer. United are keen to sign a striker
