A teenage boy said people were ‘crying’ and ‘panicking’ when a 14-year-old collapsed after being stabbed to the neck. Nathaniel Shani died after being knifed in Harpurhey.
Two boys have gone on trial accused of murder at Manchester Crown Court. Boy A, aged 14, and Boy B, aged 13, both deny the charge. The pair cannot be named for legal reasons.
Jurors have heard that the boys had met in an alleyway off Tavistock Square as part of a ‘fight to settle differences’, after a friend of Nathaniel’s had cannabis stolen from him. The jury has heard that there is ‘no dispute’ that Boy A stabbed Nathaniel, but he is expected to argue that he was acting in self-defence.

Prosecutors allege that Boy B had a screwdriver and claim that he ‘encouraged’ Boy A. On the third day of the trial, the jury heard evidence from a 15-year-old boy, who also cannot be named for legal reasons. He was present in the alleyway when Nathaniel was stabbed last year.
Under questioning, he agreed that Nathaniel was ‘very cross’ when he learned that cannabis had been stolen from his friend, earlier on the day he was fatally stabbed. Jurors have heard that Nathaniel had become involved in ‘street level’ drug dealing ‘through people older than him’.
Nathaniel later messaged friends to say: “Bro it matters about reputation bro. We look so wet bro.
“We have let [Boy A] and that rob people. We look so f****** wet bro. At least go and get this s*** back.”
In another message, Nathaniel told others to bring weapons including a knife for him, as he said he couldn’t because his mother was in the kitchen, the jury has heard.
