A boy of 12 attacked on his way to school earlier this week was subjected to an 'unprovoked' assault by a man in front of shocked fellow pupils, police have confirmed.
The youngster suffered head injuries during the attack near Cheetham Hill Road while he was heading to Abraham Moss Community School in Crumpsall where is a year 8 pupil.
The incident happened at around 8am and was witnessed by other shocked pupils, the M.E.N. understands.

The boy was taken to hospital from the scene. He suffered head injuries which are believed to be minor. Patrols have now been stepped up in the local area 'to reassure' locals, according to Greater Manchester Police.
Andy Shakos, executive headteacher at Abraham Moss Community School, said: "We're very concerned about the incident and are helping police with their enquiries. We would strongly urge anyone who has any information about it to speak to the police.
"We hope our pupil makes a speedy recovery and are looking forward to welcoming them back in school."
On the day of the incident, GMP appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
A GMP spokesperson said: "We would like to reassure the local community that there will be additional high-visibility officers patrolling the Cheetham Hill area and supporting ongoing enquiries into this incident.
"Officers are there to reassure and support the local community as well as keep the public safe. If anyone has any concerns, our officers will be happy to assist."
Since the attack, GMP has confirmed the attack was 'unprovoked' and carried out by a man.
