Ayushmann Khurrana on how 2023 Debunked Box Office Conspiracy Theories, Validation From South India (EXCLUSIVE)

Naman Ramachandran Bollywood A-list actor Ayushmann Khurrana scored another major hit in 2023 with comedy sequel “Dream Girl 2.” But he is still happy to have achieved what he describes as “validation.” The film was one of several medium budget Hindi-language films that became box office successes, including “OMG 2,” “Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway,” “Zara Hatke Zara Bachke,” “Satyaprem Ki Katha” and “12th Fail.” These effectively debunked the notion that only big budget spectacles like “Pathaan” or “Jawan” would work at the post-pandemic Bollywood box office, which had a poor 2022. “There was a conspiracy theory, maybe a year back, that Indian audiences [were] only looking for spectacles or larger-than-life films, but this year, a lot of films, which not really big budget but mid budget, did really well,” Khurrana told Variety.

George Clooney Q&A: ‘The Boys In The Boat,’ Matthew Perry Memories, The $150M SAG-AFTRA Offer & ‘Wolfs’ Sequel With Brad Pitt & Jon Watts

EXCLUSIVE: In a tense moment during the protracted SAG-AFTRA strike when guild negotiators weren’t talking to studios/streamers as film workers faced home foreclosures with no paychecks for six months and no end in sight, George Clooney led other top A-listers in offering to uncap dues and contribute $150 million over three years to guild coffers to help qualify more actors for health benefits and other things. While he has long enjoyed the spoils of an above the line life, Clooney has never forgotten the struggling showbiz underclass he was part of before ER changed his life.

‘The Boys In The Boat’ Review: George Clooney’s Classical Underdog Sports Drama Is Conventional But Still Worthy Of Merit

The current, somewhat glib joke about George Clooney as a filmmaker is that he makes movies that “don’t exist,” i.e., are not made for the current cinematic zeitgeist and are often out of step with what the culture is watching and consuming. And there’s an argument to be made, no matter how shallow and maybe that ageist the joke is, that there’s something to it, perhaps going as far back as 2008’s throwback comedy “Leatherheads,” which really wasn’t for audiences at the time either.
