The producers of the movie The Blind Side are speaking out to clear up some confusion about profits earned by former NFL player Michael Oher and the Tuohy family.
As you already know, the film was inspired by the real story of the Tuohy family taking in Oher, a high school football player, and adopting him as their own.
Years later, Oher, now 37, has alleged that the Tuohy family never actually adopted him and put him into a conservatorship instead. He says the family made millions of dollars from the movie while he received nothing for his rights.
The Blind Side won an Oscar for Sandra Bullock‘s performance as Leigh Anne Tuohy and was also nominated for Best Picture. The film grossed $330 million at the box office and has made millions more from home video sales and streaming rights, among other ancillary revenues.
So, how much did the family actually earn?

“The deal that was made by Fox for the Tuohys’ and Michael Oher’s life rights was consistent with the marketplace at that time for the rights of relatively unknown individuals. Therefore, it did not include significant payouts in the event of the film’s success,” Alcon Entertainment said in a statement to THR. “As a result, the notion that the Tuohys were paid millions of dollars by Alcon to the detriment of Michael Oher is false. In fact, Alcon has paid approximately $767,000 to the talent agency that represents the Tuohy family and Michael Oher (who, presumably, took commission before passing it through).”
The family, including Oher, received $767,000 total, though it’s unclear how that was actually divided up.
This amount is consistent with the statement released last week by the Tuohy family about their profits for the movie.
