Bistro Marc, the new French bistro breathing life back into Stockport’s historic Winter’s building

Anyone who’s chosen the pandemic to start a new business will probably look back in a few years’ time and wonder why on earth they did it. Joining their number are Rachel Winter Jones and Marc Molé, now the proud custodians of Stockport’s historic Winter’s building.
Reclaiming the iconic space - which is owned by the council and which had laid empty for some years - they have created a classic French bistro inside with Marc, a former architect from Paris, and Rachel, a lawyer who spent 20 years at the World Bank, writing a new chapter for themselves in the world of food.
It’s taken them three years in all to complete Bistro Marc, with the couple stepping into the building for the first time in January of 2019. But they’ve finally thrown open their doors on Little Underbank this week.
“I first met Marc in Paris, in a French bistro on a blind date in 2004, and we walked in here, and there’s all this dark wood, and the beautiful old lights, and we just knew it would lend itself so well to this French bistro feel,” said Rachel. “We love this building, and have from the moment we walked in.”
The couple talk about the building as the ‘third partner’ in their business, and worked with the likes of local interiors shop Agapanthus on the restoration, particularly some of the original ornate lighting. Thanks to the grade II listing of the site, even the original stucco ceiling remains intact.
But perhaps most importantly, the shop’s famous clock is now chiming again. The shop was first opened as a jewellers in 1890 by Jacob Winter, and was one of the first places in the town to have electricity. Its ornate clock with its figures of a soldier, a sailor and old father time, lives long the memory of Stockport residents.
Now with
