Green Day‘s Billie Joe Armstrong has voiced his thoughts on the current emo revival. The band’s frontman was speaking to The Guardian alongside bandmates Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool about their forthcoming album ‘Saviors’. Given that they debuted the album’s first singles, ‘The American Dream Is Killing Me’ and ‘Look Ma, No Brains!’, at When We Were Young Festival, they were asked what they thought about the current revival in recent years of rock music from the ’90s and ’00s.“Emo was dead – then just five years later we’re having emo club nights. Like, aren’t you supposed to wait another five years for this? My Chemical Romance just broke up!” Armstrong said.“I think streaming and the way things go viral now [is fuelling it].
There’s this band, the Walters, that broke up four years ago and suddenly they have this song that’s everywhere. Same thing with Deftones – all of a sudden their music is showing up on all these TikTok videos. There’s this new algorithmic way of discovering new stuff.
It’s really prevalent in rock music and it shows how people are paying less attention to the radio [and other traditional platforms].”Elsewhere in the interview, Armstrong reveals that he frequently went to football matches while Green Day were recording ‘Saviors’ in London with legendary producer Rob Cavallo, and said it was his favourite thing about British culture.“I went to a lot of football games: Arsenal, Leyton Orient, Fulham. I went to The Den to see Millwall. That was amazing.
Man, if you really want to experience British culture that’s what you should do,” he said.“Football is like a fucking religion. It’s like being at a big rock concert. You practically need earplugs! I’ve always wanted to check out all the different divisions,

Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello has responded to those criticising Green Day for recently switching up their lyrics. The moment came after the pop-punk trio – comprised of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool – made headlines for their controversial performance at Dick Clarke’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve last week.During the set, the frontman altered the lyrics to the iconic 2004 track ‘American Idiot’, replacing the original line “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” with “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda”.The song, initially written as a diss against George W. Bush, instead made a shot at former US President Donald Trump, making reference to his presidential rally slogan, “Make America Great Again” (MAGA).Unsurprisingly, the moment at the New Year’s Eve show went on to spur some backlash for the members, with Tesla founder and tech billionaire Elon Musk criticising the move on X/Twitter, writing: “Green Day goes from raging against the machine to milquetoastedly raging for it.”The decision to change up the line also warranted a segment on Fox News, with hosts reportedly suggesting that “people are so sick of being preached at about politics from rock bands”.“Stick to what you’re good at.
Green Day have dropped a defiant new track called ‘One Eyed Bastard’ – you can listen to it below.Released today (January 5), the track is the latest preview of the pop-punk trio’s upcoming album ‘Saviors’, and follows on from recent tracks ‘Dilemma’, ‘The American Dream Is Killing Me’ and ‘Look Ma, No Brains!’.Unlike their personal last single ‘Dilemma’, which was shared last month, ‘One Eyed Bastard’ takes on the more traditional Green Day sound – a defiant pop-punk anthem that focuses on resistance.“Vendetta is a friend of mine/ Revenge is sweeter than wine/ I never asked to hear your god-damned feelings/ Get on your knees when you are kissing my ring,” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong sings in the build-up to the chorus. It also comes alongside a cartoon-style visual accompaniment, which you can check out below.“’One Eyed Bastard’ started off as just a riff that I had – a shuffle, almost like a Black Sabbath kind of riff.
Billie Eilish has recalled going through a “dark episode” before writing ‘What Was I Made For?’, her song for the Barbie soundtrack. The song was released back in July as part of the highly anticipated film’s official soundtrack, and has been nominated for Best Original Song at the 2024 Oscars alongside Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo and more.Last night (January 4), the song won the Chairman’s Award at the Palm Springs Film Festival, and Eilish spoke of the difficulties she had before writing the song during her acceptance speech.“I would really like to say that this award and any recognition that this song gets, I just want to dedicate to anyone who experiences hopelessness, the feeling of existential dread and feeling like, what’s the point, why am I here and why am I doing this?” Eilish said.“I think we all feel like that occasionally, but I think if somebody like me, with the amount of privilege that I have and the incredible things that I get to do and be and how I have really not wanted to be here … sorry to be dark, damn, but I’ve spent a lot of time feeling that way.”She added: “I just want to say to anyone that feels that way, be patient with yourself and know that it is, I think, worth it all.Eilish went on to discuss how she “was in a dark episode and things didn’t make sense in life” when she was asked to write a song for Barbie. “I just didn’t understand what the point was and why you would keep going.
Billie Eilish gave an emotional acceptance speech while being honored at the 2024 Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards and she apologized for being “dark.”
