But of course, Harvey Weinstein figures into the story,” Smith said.The film was released theatrically by Lionsgate, with Columbia/TriaStar receiving the home video rights for a limited time, “but then the rights lapsed,” said Smith.He went on to explain how, roughly a decade later, he received a call from Weinstein “out of the blue” about a potential Dogma sequel or TV series.However, Smith’s excitement was short lived after learning from Miramax executive John Gordon that Weinstein may have had an ulterior motive.According to Smith, Gordon allegedly said that Weinstein was “calling everyone because he knew the story [about the rape allegations against him] was coming, and wanted to find out who spoke [to The New York Times].Smith went to explain how, after learning that Weinstein was trying to sell the rights to the film for $5million (£4.4 million), he and his lawyers tried to buy it back, “which we felt very dirty about because we didn’t want to give him money,” he said.However, Weinstein apparently “scoffed” at his various offers.

AFI Fest said Tuesday that its lineup for the upcoming 2022 edition will include red-carpet premieres for six films including the latest movies from Alejandro González Iñárritu and Guillermo del Toro as well as the Harvey Weinstein exposé story She Said and Florian Zeller’s The Son starring Hugh Jackman.

The annual Buyers & Sellers event returns as an in-person fixture at which international sales agents can meet with U.K. buyers, and NETWORK@LFF will host masterclasses and events for 12 U.K.-based writers, directors and producers to interact with international filmmakers and industry executives at the festival.

So how does that apply to “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”? Three years ago, Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” was a seamlessly debonair retro whodunit, set in the mansion of a murdered mystery novelist, that not only evoked the edge-of-your-brain storytelling panache of Agatha Christie but expanded the Christie genre into something delectable in its meta cleverness. At a time when comic-book films, action films, and other forms of kinetic fantasy appeared to be in the final stages of killing off everything else, “Knives Out” was a cathartic reminder that a movie mode we associate with vintage Hollywood — dialogue of airy density and wit, characters who pop with all-too-human flaws and foibles, a plot that zigs and zags until you’ll follow it anywhere — could still make a righteous stand at the megaplex. Holding it all together was Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc, the film’s Southern-gentleman re-imagining of a Hercule Poirot/Sherlock Holmes sleuth, whose wryly deceptive genius made him, for some of us, more super than any superhero.

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic The Nashville Film Festival announced the full lineup Friday for a fall gathering of filmgoers in Music City that will begin with the Brandi Carlile-produced documentary “The Return of Tanya Tucker” as the gala opening on Sept. 29 and end with director Sacha Jenkins’ “Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues” for closing night on Oct. 5. The 53rd annual edition of the festival will take place both in-person and virtually, with a selection of more than 150 films that includes 38 full-length features, about 30 of which will be world, North American or U.S. premieres. Although the virtual component continues to be strong for the festival, its leaders note that of the 150 or so films in the festival, more than 50 will screen for audiences in Nashville venues, starting with the Tanya Tucker doc, which will be seen in the historic main auditorium of the city’s beloved Belcourt Theater, one of the original homes of the Grand Ole Opry. Other locations include the Franklin Theater in the nearby city of that name, and the TPAC Andrew Johnson Theater in downtown Nashville.
