Creators and showrunners of some of the top dramas on the small screen came together for Variety’s “A Night in the Writers’ Room” to discuss bringing new ideas to old properties, what it’s like to write a series finale and more.Moderated by TV features editor Emily Longeretta, the event began with a conversation about what it looks like to run a writers’ room under pandemic restrictions.

Jennifer Maas TV Business WriterThe midseason finale of the sixth and final season of “Better Call Saul” grew 87% with three days of delayed viewership, according to Nielsen’s Live + 3 data.The May 23 episode, which is the conclusion of Part 1 of the “Breaking Bad” prequel’s final chapter, drew 2.2 million viewers including its initial linear airing on AMC, plus three days of mostly DVR viewing.According to AMC, viewership via streamer AMC+ was up 61% over the Season 6 premiere, and “Better Call Saul” currently stands as the top acquisition driver in the history of the SVOD.“The response to this final season of Better Call Saul, from viewers, critics, long-time fans and new arrivals to the series – on all platforms – has been everything we had hoped for,” said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. “The series looks like nothing else on television, which is a tribute to the creative genius and excellence of Vince, Peter, Bob, Rhea, Giancarlo, Patrick, Jonathan, Michael, Tony, our partners at Sony and everyone else associated with this extraordinary effort.

“Better Call Saul” recently concluded the first half of its sixth and final season in explosive fashion, with the critically praised drama scoring big numbers across linear, streaming and social. Better Call Saul has delivered a surprising character death in the mid-season finale for season six.In the episode titled Plan and Execution, Howard Hamlin (Patrick Fabian) was executed in cold blood by Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton) inside Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn) and Jimmy McGill’s (Bob Odenkirk) apartment.The unfortunate confrontation takes place while Kim and Jimmy celebrate their win over Howard at the Sandpiper Crossing mediation. Howard, who is humiliated by the defeat, turns up at their flat to interrupt the celebrations and air his grievances about being played.After security is diverted from Kim and Jimmy’s apartment to a supposed threat at Gus Fring’s launderette, Lalo makes a surprise visit to their home.

Saturday Night Live bid farewell to four veteran cast members tonight, Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Pete Davidson and Kyle Mooney. McKinnon, Bryant and Davidson, who have all become household names since SNL launched their careers, all got individual sendoffs with some of their most popular recurring skits. Mooney, who has spent most of his time on the show as a valuable but underrated performer, made an understated — yet dramatic — exit.

Things are heating up for Legendary’s Monsterverse.Last week we learned that Dan Stevens would be joining the untitled “Godzilla vs. Kong” sequel that will be filming in Australia this summer and now Legendary has announced that Matt Shakman, who has directed episodes of “Game of Thrones,” “The Boys” and all of “WandaVision,” will be helming the first two episodes of the new Monsterverse TV series for Apple TV+.Not much is known about the upcoming series, aside from the fact that it will focus on “one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.” (Yes, Godzilla is supposed to be involved in some capacity and Toho is a co-producer.)Chris Black (“Outcast”) will serve as showrunner, with Black and comic book favorite Matt Fraction (whose “Hawkeye” comics were the basis for the recent Disney+ series) serving as executive producers.

Better Call Saul captured the top spot on a sleepy week, collecting 821 million minutes of viewing for its first five seasons on Netflix.
