Almost all of us will think to apply a face SPF before we go out in the summer sunshine – or any sunshine, that is – but do you forget to apply a specific UV block to your hair and scalp? You're not alone. Most of us will say yes to that, but a UV protectant can stop sunshine-related dryness, frizz and brittle, breakage-prone ends.
If you’re wondering how to incorporate one into your hair regime, and how to reduce hair damage in the summer months, we’ve been chatting to Erim Kaur, founder of hair brand ByErim, to get her top tips… Choose a gentle, SLS-free shampoo to maintain moisture “UVA and UVB rays essentially dry your hair strands which can lead to brittle, split ends, and discolouration. Maintain your hair moisture as much as possible by switching to a gentle, soap-free shampoo which won't strip the natural oils from your hair,” says Erim.
. Use a protective non greasy, natural oil on your scalp “Heatwaves bring humidity, and with humidity comes extra debris, pollen, sweat and dirt that stick to your hair and scalp,” Erim explains.
“Adding a layer of non-greasy natural oil to your scalp helps to combat some of these effects. Coconut oil is a great choice as it's known for its antibacterial and antifungal qualities.” Top tip: If your hair is prone to becoming greasy quickly, use an oil as a weekly treatment and wash out with your shampoo.
Erim also recommends using a natural oil treatment like her Luxury Hair Oil, £25 here, which blends nourishing and repairing oils like alma, sweet almond and castor – known for being rich in fatty acids Use an SPF designed for your scalp “Your head is the first thing that hits the sun, and if you have thinner or light coloured hair you're more at risk of scalp burn. Just like you
