'Beauty and the Beast' Prequel Series Canceled, Stars Luke Evans and Josh Gad React

Zack Sharf Josh Gad recently told The Independent that he has some regrets over how Disney’s 2017 live action “Beauty and the Beast” remake handled making his character a gay man.Gad starred in the film as LeFou, the long-suffering sidekick to Gaston (played by Luke Evans in the film). The movie’s director, Bill Condon, announced in USA Today ahead of the film’s release that his “Beauty and the Beast” would introduce Disney’s first openly gay character.

Disney really has a spotty history over the past several years with promising LGBTQ+ inclusion in blockbuster films but not really delivering that. We’ve seen characters teased.

There was much controversy ahead of the 2017 release of Disney’s live-action “Beauty and the Beast” when director Bill Condon teased an “exclusively gay moment” involving one of the film’s characters.

Singer Natalie Imbruglia was crowned the winner of The Masked Singer UK after she was unveiled as Panda on the hit ITV show. The Australian-British songwriter and actress, who has hits including Torn, Shiver and Wrong Impression, floored Mo Gilligan, Rita Ora, Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall and guest judge Joss Stone during the final on Saturday 12 February.

“This is a very sad message for us to tweet. We are devastated. Goodbye, for now, from Gaston and Le fou,” Luke Evans wrote on Twitter shortly after reports surfaced that Disney+ cancelled the “Beauty and the Beast” prequel series, “The Little Town”, it had been working on.

The show was meant to begin shooting this summer in Europe, but certain creative elements were not yet ready, which would have delayed shooting. Given the scheduling issues this would cause with the show’s cast as well as weather constraints, it was decided to hold off and revisit the show at a later date.News of the postponement comes just days after it was announced that Rita Ora was set to join the cast of the show, while Variety exclusively reported that “Hawkeye” alum Fra Fee was joining back in January.

Disney+’s Beauty and the Beast prequel series will not be moving forward at this time. The decision comes as the lead cast of the eight-episode series had been assembled ahead of the planned summer 2022 shoot in the U.K.

British pop star Rita Ora is joining Disney+’s Beauty and the Beast prequel series.

The news was announced Monday during Disney Branded Television’s session at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour. On the “Beauty and the Beast” (working title) prequel, Ora will star as “a fugitive with surprising abilities who carries with her a secret that could potentially affect an entire kingdom.” She joins a cast that includes Josh Gad, Luke Evans, Briana Middleton, Fra Fee and Jelani Alladin.Gad also serves as an executive producer and co-showrunner, along with Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz.

The Masked Singer UK's forthcoming finale will gather troops from across the first two seasons to see out this year's competition. ITV has confirmed to Digital Spy that 2021 champion Joss Stone is onboard as the latest guest judge – taking over from Dame Joan Collins who appeared on the semi-final – whilst Nicola Roberts (in her Queen Bee get-up), Jason Manford (Hedgehog) and Aston Merrygold (Robin) will duet with the three finalists Robobunny, Panda and Mushroom.
