Eastenders star Charlie Brooks has made Janine Butcher one of the most iconic TV villains of recent years. But originally Janine was played by a different actress who left fame entirely to forge a new career. In fact over the years the character, known for her transformation from sweet girl to husband killer, has been portrayed by three actors.
Taking on the role in 1999, Charlie is today considered the definitive Janine.
However, two other actors helped shape this popular role. Rebecca Michael was the first to play Janine from 1989 to 1993 as a child actor, but she decided to leave the limelight to focus on her education. Rebecca has since built a successful career in marketing, management, and business.
Her studies have led to an even more glamorous life with roles around the world, including Tokyo, Singapore, and California. In 2019, she secured the impressive position of Google's director of global marketing. After Rebecca's departure from the soap, Alexia Demetriou took over the role for three years from 1993 to 1996.
After an absence from screens, in 1999 we met the Janine we all know and love today when Charlie stepped in as a teenager. She was perfect for the role, with some of the biggest storylines and murders, including the memorable one where she killed her husband Barry by pushing him off a cliff.
The actor has won four soap awards, including villain of the year three times and best exit. Charlie decided to leave Albert Square in 2004 but returned permanently in December 2008.
During her time away from the show, the 42 year old competed in BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, which she won in 2011. A year later, she won her season of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here, beating campmate and former Pussycat Doll
