A new statement from the BBC includes an apology to a family involved in an alleged scandal with News at Ten's presenter Huw Edwards. BBC bosses apologised to the relatives of a young person who Huw, 62, allegedly gifted more than £35k to when they turned 17.
Previously, in July last year, reports suggested that an unknown host was named in a complaint lodged to the BBC, which led to Huw's wife 'outing' him as the individual in question. A review of non-editorial complaints by experts at Deloitte is now done, the BBC said today.
The report publicised required "enhanced" safeguards so complaints are dealt with more efficiently.
Huw has been adbesnt from TV screens since his last appearance on BBC News on 5 July 2023, following a suspension by the network due to these allegations. BBC Group Chief Operating Officer Leigh Tavazia spoke out on Tuesday, saying: "The review identifies process improvements we accept those in full, and we are delivering on an action plan with a number of enhancements already in place." Leigh also added: "The report identifies specific process shortcomings in the presenter case.
The initial complaint in this case was not escalated quickly enough to senior management and we have apologised to the complainant for this." The BBC Group CEO thanked Deloitte for looking into things and thanked the BBC staff and complainants interviewed for their contributions.
