Barry Humphries was making people smile for almost nine decades, and that didn’t change in the last few months of his life. In the last known photos of the much-loved comedian, who died on Saturday (April 22) aged 89, he brought joy to two fans as he stopped for selfies. Wearing his famous cheeky grin, the Melbourne-born was in high spirits as he hugged two women, then standing in the middle and placing an arm around them both.
The Dame Edna Everage creator was barefoot and sported salmon-pink chinos and a striped shirt, enjoying a day out in the sunshine. Taken and shared on Instagram in December 2022, these snaps captured his last public appearance, which we know of. Humphries’ death comes after a stay in hospital in Sydney, Australia, where he was being treated after suffering complications from hip surgery.
His family shared a heartfelt statement. ‘He was completely himself until the very end, never losing his brilliant mind, his unique wit and generosity of spirit. ‘With over 70 years on the stage, he was an entertainer to his core, touring up until the last year of his life and planning more shows that will sadly never be.
‘His audiences were precious to him, and he never took them for granted. ’They added: ‘Although he may be best remembered for his work in theatre, he was a painter, author, poet, and a collector and lover of a rt in all its forms. ‘He was also a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a friend and confidant to many.
