According to Peacock, I Love You, You Hate Me will follow “the rise and fall of Barney the Dinosaur’s furious backlash — and what it says about the human need to hate. From Barney-bashing to frat parties to homicidal video games, something in American society broke into a million pieces, and it’s never been put together again… or is this just who we were all along?”
“As [Sheryl's] beloved character was heading into the stratosphere,” Al Roker says in the trailer, “people couldn’t accept that this was just a show. And so, let the bashing begin.”
The “bashing” came in the form of people violently destroying Barney merchandise along with spreading lies, including one claim that the actors in the barney suit used to hide drugs in costume’s tail.
Former Barney performer Bob West also recalled the death threats he and his family received.
“They were violent and explicit, death and dismemberment of my family,” Bob recalled. “They were gonna come and find me, and they were going to kill me.”
I Love You, You Hate Me is set to premiere on October 12 on Peacock.
