‘Barbie,’ ‘Society of the Snow,’ & ‘Killers Of The Flower Moon’ Top 2024 Oscars Shortlist

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor Awards Circuit Column: It’s decision time. After months of campaigning, festivalgoing, splashy premieres, magazine profiles and morning-show appearances, Academy voters will finally get their ballots this week (Thursday, Jan. 11).

The Art Directors Guild revealed the nominees for the 28th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards also known as the ADG Awards this morning and there were, for better or worse, few surprises. On the film side, potential Oscar nominees “Asteroid City,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things” and “Oppenheimer” all earned nominations in the three ADG film categories.

Amid the flood of awards-season nominations comes AARP, whose Movies for Grownups Awards noms arrived today. Oppenheimer leads the way with six mentions, followed by Killers of the Flower Moon with five. Both will vie for Best Picture alongside Barbie, The Color Purple and Maestro.

Golden Globes took place last night (January 7) and saw many of this year’s highly anticipated films and television shows taking home awards.The ceremony, which took place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, was the first to air live on CBS in the US since 1982. Hosted by stand-up comedian, Jo Koy, the ceremony saw the celebration of ‘Barbenheimer’, with the two highly-acclaimed movies (Barbie and Oppenheimer) receiving 17 nominations between them.But it was Oppenheimer which swept the awards, its lead and supporting actor both being recognised, along with winning Best Motion Picture – Drama.

It was the year of “Barbenheimer,” as Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie’s hot pink comedy “Barbie” led all the nominees with 10 and “Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy’s biopic about the inventor of the atomic bomb, followed closely with eight.

It’s a Barbie reunion! Yes, Barbie herself, Margot Robbie, director Greta Gerwig, and co-star America Ferrera had a little impromptu reunion at the 2024 Palm Springs International Film Festival Film Awards, held on January 4 in Palm Springs, California. Sadly, handsome co-star Ryan Gosling (Ken) wasn’t in attendance.

They aren’t always completely indicative of where The Academy is leaning, but, often, the BAFTA Awards longlists are better early indicators of potential Oscar nominations (and winners) than the BAFTA Awards nominations themselves. In that respect, the 2024 BAFTA Awards longlists are a very good sign for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” Each of those films had 15 mentions, followed by Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” with 14.

The BAFTA Film Awards have unveiled this year’s longlists for 24 categories, and in the lead are Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, and Martin Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon. Scroll down for the lists in full.

Over the years, its influence on the Oscars has been undeniable, with many of its winners often helping to shape a narrative. After getting ignored by all the major guilds, last year’s German-language film “All Quiet on the Western Front” made a big showing before going on to nab nine Oscar nominations and winning four.

Alliance of Women Film Journalists have announced the winners of the annual AWFJ EDA awards. “Barbie” took home multiple awards in the “Best Of” category, including Best Director for Greta Gerwig, Original Screenplay for Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling, and the film’s casting directors Lucy Brava and Allison Jones also took home an award.

From a toy doll to an author with a triumphant “Black book” to a reverse Frankenstein tale that shows a whole lot of sex, the Academy has an opportunity to invite the softer side of cinema to its ceremony.
