Ken-ergy. With just days left to go until Greta Gerwig’s hotly-anticipated “Barbie” movie hits theaters, co-star Ryan Gosling has emerged as one of the film’s most effective — and lovably ludicrous — marketing tools.
From a string of eyebrow-raising statements to the press to the newly-released power ballad “I’m Just Ken,” where Barbie’s main squeeze contemplates his possible tragic “destiny to live and die a life of blonde fragility,” the two-time Oscar nominee appears to have very nearly gone full method in his attempts to promote the role. That, or he’s just getting more than a little punchy as the film’s seemingly endless publicity campaign comes to a close.
Either way, we’re loving the ride. What follows is a rough timeline of Gosling’s journey from seemingly normal human person into the role he was very apparently born to play. You may remember — no, you must remember — this time last year, when the first photos from the set of “Barbie” leaked to show Ryan Gosling’s Ken and Margot Robbie’s Barbie in head-to-toe neon while rollerblading in Venice Beach.
The photos caused such a buzz that, even though Gosling was promoting a totally different film, he addressed “Barbie” publicly for the first time.“I can’t wait for people to see the film,” Gosling told Entertainment Tonight. “That’s all I can say, otherwise Mattel will come in and box me up.” Historians may note that this interview also marks the first known usage of the term “Ken-ergy.”Referencing a joke from ‘The Grey Man’ — the Netflix thriller he was supposed to be promoting at the time — where Gosling’s co-star makes a dig about his “Ken doll” looks, Gosling ruminated: “I have that Ken-ergy that you can feel, obviously.”While a guest on The Tonight Show last

plot forward in “Barbie” — and Rob Thomas loves it.Matchbox Twenty’s frontman weighed in on the inclusion of 1996’s “Push” in the new “Barbie” movie — admitting he was worried at first about it being a joke, but has since recognized it’s a clever callout.Ken (Ryan Gosling) plays the track for hours on end on his guitar for Barbie (Margot Robbie) while sitting around a campfire. The scene (and song) is a pivotal point in the film, pushing an ego-bruised Ken to embrace toxic masculinity and take over Barbie Land — which Thomas praised as a perfect choice.“I want to preface this by saying that I thought it was hilarious. But in ‘Bring It On,’ [Kirsten Dunst’s character] has this douchey boyfriend.
Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas is sharing his thoughts on the iconic moment when Ryan Gosling covers the band's 1996 hit track, «Push.»Performed by Gosling (Ken), the stellar scene features Gosling sitting around a campfire and strumming his guitar as he sings the song at Margot Robbie (Barbie) for hours on end.The hilarious scene marks a turning point in the film, as Barbie and her fellow dolls attempt to distract the Kens and take back Barbieland. After a visit to the real world, Gosling's Ken transformed the land into «Kendom,» a patriarchal world filled with all the things he thinks make a man — horses, sports, Sylvester Stallone style and very much included. Speaking about the song's use in the film, Thomas told he was initially worried that the rock group might become the butt of a joke.

Margot Robbie has said she was teased by her friends for not having a kissing scene with her Barbie co-star Ryan Gosling. In the film directed by Greta Gerwig, Barbie (Robbie) and Ken (Gosling) never share a kiss on screen, which became a source of ridicule in Robbie’s circle of friends.Asked by People whether she was happy she didn’t have to fully kiss Gosling in the film, Robbie, who also served as a producer, said: “Uh no! That didn’t feel like a win for me.“All of my girlfriends were like, ‘Well you did a whole movie with him and you don’t kiss? What’s wrong with you? I thought you were kind of in charge on this one!’”She added: “I was like, ‘I know, I can’t check that one off [my list].’”Gosling, however, was happy with how they navigated their relationship. “It was so funny trying to figure out what their idea of kissing might be,” the actor said.
the New York Times. “Just come do the ‘Barbie’ movie, I’ll buy you a present every day.”Gosling revealed that the appealing offer “started as a joke in a text.”“There was suddenly this pink present from Barbie to Ken, every day, for a very long shoot. Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic Check out the brain on Barbie! Sure, she’s just a doll, but that doesn’t mean she has to be an airhead. Therein lies “Lady Bird” director Greta Gerwig’s inspired, 21st-century solution to bringing one of America’s most iconic playthings to life on the big screen. Combine that with the casting of Margot Robbie in the title role, and “Barbie” is already starting out on the right, perfectly arched foot. So what if this high-concept comedy falls a bit flat in the final stretch? Barbie’s strength as a brand comes from her aspirational appeal. While some have rightly criticized the doll for setting unrealistic beauty standards, Barbie also showed girls they can do and be anything, as different models have portrayed her as president, a rocket scientist, even trans. You know who else sets unrealistic beauty standards? Movie stars. Like Barbie, they serve as role models, which is what makes Gerwig’s take on the ultra-popular toy line so darn smart. Robbie might be a dead-ringer for Barbie, but her moxie powers the performance. Gerwig has made the kind of family film she surely wishes had been available to her when she was a girl, sneaking a message (several of them, really) inside Barbie’s hollow hourglass figure.
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are opening up about all things Barbie ahead of the movie’s release.
