EastEnders actress Dame Barbara Windsor's widower Scott Mitchell has shared his distress as he detailed how cruel trolls accused him of being with her for her money. Barbara and Scott tied the knot in April 2000, but their 27 year age gap led to public scrutiny and cruel comments from strangers, despite the pair enjoying an almost three-decades long romance.
The pair remained together until Barbara’s death at the age of 83 in 2020, after suffering from dementia. In the aftermath of his beloved wife’s death, her and Scott’s joint company was moved solely into his name, something that is standard practise in these situations.
But due to the high profile nature of their relationship this update was reported online, sparking cruel comments from trolls, as 59 year old explains in his new book By Your Side: My Life Loving Barbara Windsor. Speaking to The Sun, Scott has discussed some of the cruel comments he’s come across online.
He said: “Someone had said, 'I see the long game paid off.' After 27 years and everything we went through together, it was shocking that someone could actually think like that. But it showed me that whatever you do, there’s always going to be someone critical." He goes on to discuss how losing Barbara to dementia prompted him to write about their time together, adding that he wanted to put his thoughts down in an attempt to look forward.
Widower Scott painfully opens up on how almost three years on from Barbara's death he still sometimes wakes in the middle of the night, wondering if she's okay, before remembering that she has died. In the days following his wife’s death, Scott previously said that he was “completely overwhelmed” and grateful after fans raised over £100,000 for Alzheimer's Research UK
