Scottish ministers have been urged to finally ban “cruel and unnecessary” snare traps after an expert group recommended the move on animal welfare grounds. Labour MSP Colin Smyth said snaring was a “barbaric” practice that needed to be “consigned to the history books”.
And speaking to the Record, he vowed that if the SNP-Green government doesn’t deliver the ban in a forthcoming bill on grouse moor shooting, he will seek to amend the legislation to include it. Snares are wire traps used to control animals like foxes and rabbits in order to protect crops and livestock, but environmentalists insist the method is inhumane.
The SNP has previously rejected calls for an outright ban, claiming there are a lack of suitable alternatives. But the issue has been revisited since the Scottish Greens, who support a ban, joined Nicola Sturgeon’s government.
And last week, the Scottish Animal Welfare Commission recommended to the government to scrap the practice, saying it raised “significant welfare concerns” for affected species.
Smyth, Scottish Labour’s animal welfare spokesman, said: "This report could not be clearer – these barbaric traps must be consigned to the history books. The SNP have wasted years defending this cruel and unnecessary practice, but it can’t go on.
"The Greens must not abandon the last of their commitment to animal welfare by letting their own government ignore this important recommendation.”
He added: "If a ban isn't included when the government publishes the Wildlife Management Bill, then I will seek to amend the bill to deliver a ban. We need to act on this expert advice and end snaring at long last."
