The RHS further notes that heavy clay soils and inadequate soil preparation prior to laying the lawn can exacerbate the problem, stripping the soil and grass of essential nutrients and causing root damage and unsightly patches.
However, gardening experts have come forward with their best advice for enhancing drainage and revitalising soil.

A member of the Gardening on a budget Facebook group sought advice, posting: "What can I do to fix my garden that holds water and becomes like a paddling pool? " In response, another user shared their successful strategy for dealing with a boggy new build garden.
Their solution was detailed as follows: "My garden used to store all the materials, so it was very boggy. I put drainage on either side and planted a few conifer trees - their roots drink a mass amount of water. Then, I poked a few holes in the ground and laid fine sand. All is well so far."
This was supported by self-proclaimed amateur gardener Tom Smart, who shared with The Guardian his experience of removing a large conifer tree from his waterlogged lawn, which resulted in "one large pond".
