Whether it’s hiding a tampon up your sleeve and running to the toilet in the hope that no one notices, or referring to menstruation as your “time of the month” rather than what it actually is, the stigma surrounding periods is something that rears its head every single day. In fact, according to research by ActionAid, more than one in three people who have periods in the UK have experienced some form of period shaming. And one area of discussion surrounding this shame refers to the language associated with menstruation related products, especially the use of the phrase ‘feminine hygiene’.
Given the stigma that surrounds periods, many people view the term as adding to the idea that periods are unhygienic and something to be ashamed of. However, in the first steps to help combat period embarrassment and to increase inclusivity for people who have periods but don’t identify as female, supermarket chain Asda has replaced its signage when displaying menstrual products.
Instead of calling items such as tampons and sanitary towels ‘feminine hygiene’ products, signs in its supermarkets now display ‘period products’ instead. And the move, which the retailer began rolling out at the end of 2021, hasn’t gone unnoticed either. Shoppers have taken to Twitter to express their joy at the shift in messaging.
“Thank you and a massive shout out to ASDA for leading the way in changing the language around menstruation. Sanitary hygiene or feminine hygiene suggests menstrual products are for something dirty.Time to change the language,” said one Twitter user. Another added: “Excellent news! “Period” is not a dirty word.
