Planned three-hour blackouts could hit UK homes this winter in a bid to protect the network, National Grid has said. But the news has sparked debate amongst readers, with some questioning whether the last-resort proposals are in fact a good idea.
Under plans, it's reported people will be paid not to use their washing machines or charge their cars during peak hours in a bid to maintain supply for the country. The National Grid warned these could take place on "really cold evenings" between 4pm and 7pm over the coming months, if the weather becomes so cold that it affects the country's gas supplies.
And while the energy company said the blackouts are "unlikely", households are being urged to take the precautions to protect themselves in case they do end up happening. National Grid boss John Pettigrew has said it hopes the UK will have enough energy to meet demand this winter, but warned that short outages may be needed if other measures to preserve supplies fail.

It is the most dire of three possible scenarios that the National Grid's Electricity System Operator’s (ESO) laid out for how Britain’s electricity grid might manage with the worst global energy crisis for decades. In the other two situations, the operator hopes that by paying people to charge their electric cars at off-peak times and firing up backup coal plants, it can reduce the risk of blackouts.
