Apple thriller ‘The Crowded Room’ shows Tom Holland shouldn’t quit his Spiderman day job: review

Tom Holland has expressed that it’s been difficult promoting series The Crowded Room after it was “horribly reviewed”.In the Apple TV+ series, which currently has a 31 per cent critics rating on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, the actor plays Danny Sullivan who is arrested for his involvement in a New York City shooting. The series is inspired by the non-fiction novel The Minds Of Billy Milligan by Daniel Keys.Speaking to Unilad, Holland compared promoting the critically-maligned series to supporting football team Tottenham Hotspur, who have never won the Premier League.“I think being a Tottenham fan is somewhat like being in The Crowded Room,” Holland said.

In both cases, the Spider-Man actor has learned to be “very resilient.” Tottenham Hotspur has never won the Premiere League. “I think being a Tottenham fan is somewhat like being in ‘The Crowded Room.’ It has taught me resilience,” Holland said. “Tottenham has never won anything and supporting them is incredibly difficult. It’s no secret my show has been so horribly reviewed, but I’m here today to promote the show and I’m still here. I’m very resilient. It’s a good quality.”

Holland said on “Live With Kelly and Mark” that bad reviews had nothing to do with his decision to break from acting. The choice was made when “The Crowded Room” wrapped filming last year, meaning Holland is already months into his Hollywood hiatus. “It’s so funny. Obviously, ‘The Crowded Room’ came out. We didn’t have very favorable reviews,” Holland said. “So the press story was that I have taken this year off because of the reviews. But I’m eight months into my year off. I’ve been chilling at home in London, going to Grand Prixes, playing golf…”

A simple Wikipedia search shows that “The Crowded Room” was inspired by Billy Milligan, the first defendant acquitted by invoking a case of dissociative identity disorder in the late 1970s. But ahead of the show’s release, critics were asked not to disclose the fractured mental state of Danny Sullivan, the Milligan analog played with doe-eyed naiveté of Tom Holland. This puzzled me, given the eminently Googleable nature of the premise. Then I started watching.
