Wayne Rooney sparked concern among fans when he pulled out of his debut appearance on Match of the Day on Saturday 13 April, citing a recent back injury as the reason for his absence. Among those worried about the former footballer’s health is his wife Coleen, who has been left taking care of him at home. Wayne, 38, sustained the injury while on a family break with Coleen, 39, and their children Kai, 14, Klay, 10, Kit, seven, and Cass, six.
Just moments before Match of the Day aired, Wayne took to X, formerly Twitter, to explain his absence. He wrote, “Gutted not to be making my debut on the iconic @BBCMOTD show tonight, it’s something I have wanted to do since I was little. "Unfortunately I have sustained a painful back injury during a holiday with my family but I look forward to being part of the team in the near future.
Good luck to @GaryLineker and the guys for tonights show and see you soon." Fans were quick to send him well wishes, with one writing, "Get well soon Wayne - looking forward to see you on @BBCMOTD soon." While another penned, "Speedy recovery champ!" And a third added, "Get well soon mate.... Back pain is awful." And now, a source close to the couple has told OK! that Coleen's been left particularly worried for her husband following his injury, and that the wider Rooney family, and Coleen's mother, have gathered around to help out during this tricky time.
They said, "Obviously, Coleen is worried about Wayne’s back - it’s an injury he sustained playing football. It’s one of those niggly injuries but he’s been in such a lot of pain.
