Emmys 2024 by playing it safe. The comedian, actor and game show host, 53, began the 2024 Emmys by honoring several TV series of youre that he said shaped him during his childhood.
Accompanied by a choir, Anderson sat at a piano and sang the theme songs for such iconic shows such as “The Facts of Life” and “Miami Vice.” He also gave a hat-tip to Norman Lear, who died in December at age 101. He still snuck in some jokes — when the choir entered, he compared this moment to his TV experiences growing up.“It was just me, my TV, my piano, and a small, local, diverse and inclusive choir from Compton.”The crowd laughed as the choir members stood next to Anderson.
“Yeah, you’re probably wondering why I have the white dude in the choir,” he said, pointing to the singers. “Fun fact, Kevin Costner is from Compton.
I wonder if he was a Crip or a Blood … who knows. Yellowstone!” When Anderson segued into singing “In the Air Tonight” after talking briefly about how “Miami Vice” taught him how to be cool, the camera panned to “Blink-182” and newest Kardashian family member, Travis Barker, accompanying Anderson and the choir on drums.
Anderson is known for appearing in shows like “Black-ish” and “Law & Order” and movies that include “Transformers” and “Scream 4,” as well as for hosting game shows such as “To Tell the Truth.” Unlike Golden Globes host Jo Koy, who quickly alienated the audience by taking potshots at them — and awkwardly scolding them for failing to laugh at his jokes — Anderson kept his jokes to a minimum and barely singled out any celebs in the room. Aside from the Costner joke, his opening was mostly earnest and musical. After the musical tribute to older shows, he gave a more traditional — albeit short — monologue.

that was a nice surprise.Anthony Anderson eschewed the traditional awkward monologue on Monday night’s 75th Emmy Awards — delivering a clever salute to several classic TV shows accompanied by a piano and a “small, inclusive choir from Compton.”(“Kevin Costner is from Compton!” he joked.)That, in itself, meant the show was off to a good start — and miles away from Jo Koy’s disastrous opening monologue on last week’s Golden Globes. For a second, I thought the opening shtick, “Mister Anderson’s Neighborhood,” would rip off Eddie Murphy’s classic “SNL” sketch (“Mister Robinson’s Neighborhood“), but it didn’t — as, instead, Anderson sang theme songs from “Good Times,” “The Facts of Life” and “Miami Vice” (with Travis Barker on drums … and Anderson was sockless, just like Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas in that landmark ’80s series). And he got the walkoff music bugaboo out of the way, joking that whoever didn’t follow the acceptance-speech timing rules would have to deal with his mother and “We Are Family” co-host, Doris Bowman (“Thank Jesus and your family and wrap it up,” he implored nominees).“The Bear” star Ayo Edebiri won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy series — repeating her Golden Globe victory — and gave a nice speech thanking her parents.Ditto for her co-star Jeremy Allen White (Best Lead Actor, Comedy), who included one-too-many “I love yous” in his.It was great to see 90-year-old Carol Burnett on stage to present the Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, won by “Abbott Elementary” star Quinta Brunson, who gave a teary acceptance speech.
Four months later than originally scheduled due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards finally showed up tonight. Fast-paced, packed with reunions, tributes and a Best Talk Show win by Trevor Noah for a Daily Show he exited in late 2022, the Anthony Anderson hosted ceremony was skillfully solid and eminently predictable.
Dylan McDermott was supposed to reunite with Connie Britton at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, but he had a much different reunion instead.
