Central Park Great Lawn closed due to damage from rain-soaked Global Citizen Festival

Global Citizen Festival that the beloved greenspace had to close for the season earlier than anticipated so months-long repairs could get underway. The immediate closure prompted New York City Councilwoman Gale Brewer to call for the annual festival’s relocation after heavy rain, foot traffic and machinery used for staging “destroyed one-third” of the park’s 55-acre Great Lawn. The Central Park Conservancy determined that the damage required the “immediate closure of the lawn” so the grass could be re-seeded, she wrote in a letter to Mayor Eric Adams on Monday. “As a result, 12 acres of public greenspace will be unavailable to New Yorkers until April 2024 or later, all to accommodate a one-day event,” Brewer wrote.

Lauryn Hill Reunites Fugees at Global Citizen, Festival Raises $240 Million in Commitments to Fight World Hunger

Jem Aswad Executive Editor, Music The 2023 installment of the annual Global Citizen Festival featured a powerful (if rainy) day of music, with sets by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lauryn Hill — who reunited the Fugees during her set — Anitta, Jung Kook — who was joined by Latto — Stray Kids side project 3Racha and a 50th anniversary of hip-hop performance with Busta Rhymes, Common, Big Daddy Kane and Rapsody alongside D-Nice. But far more important was what it accomplished in raising awareness, and commitments for some $240 million from France and Norway to the International Fund for Agricultural Development to address the global hunger crisis, announced by Emmanuel Macron, President of France. The flagship event from Global Citizen generated 3.3 million actions taken by global citizens around the world, calling on governments to address the major systemic issues our world is facing, including the global hunger crisis, the climate crisis, and equity for women and girls.

Lauryn Hill kills it at rain-soaked Global Citizen Festival

Global Citizen Festival — which traditionally has served as a golden sunset on summer as it gives way to fall — was a rain-soaked slog that turned New York’s Central Park into one giant mud puddle.Indeed, the Great Lawn that had been populated with sun worshippers for the past few months was now a sea of ponchos and rain slickers.“It’s a beautiful day!” joked “Science Guy” Bill Nye early in the spirit-dampening festivities. In fact, it was almost an hour into the main show before the first act, Brazilian sensation Anitta, even took the stage — no doubt to ensure a safe, slip-free performance. The elements didn’t stop the Grammy-nominated singer — wearing a bedazzled bodysuit with the colors of the Brazilian flag emblazoned across its halter top — from twerking, writhing and otherwise booty-popping on the wet stage. One could’ve only hoped that all that grinding and gyrating by Anitta and her hip-shaking squad was some sort of anti-rain dance. But the rain gods were not to be defeated. And neither was the Global Citizen Festival.Indie-pop star Conan Gray brought some glam to the gloom in his red, black and silver sequined jacket — with fringe sleeves for extra flair — while K-pop group Stray Kids demonstrated the global impact of hip-hop in the city that gave birth to it 50 years ago.And the BTS Army showed up in full force for Jung Kook, who got a catsuited-assist from rapper Latto on their No.
