Selome Hailu “Non-Evil Twin,” a comedy written by and starring Amber Ruffin, has received a pilot order at NBC. The multi-cam follows a woman who is forced to step in to her sister’s role as the leader of a Fortune 500 company despite knowing little about business and even less about the way her sister has been running the corporation. Ruffin is best known for hosting “The Amber Ruffin Show,” a late-night talk show on Peacock that she created after years of writing and occasionally appearing on NBC’s “Late Night With Seth Meyers.” Her other writing credits include “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” the 75th Tony Awards, the 76th Golden Globe Awards, the 66th Emmys and “Detroiters,” which she also acted in.
Ruffin is currently under an overall deal at Universal Television alongside Jenny Hagel via their production company, Straight to Cards. Writing “Non-Evil Twin” alongside Ruffin is Kenny Smith, who is known for serving as co-showrunner on ABC’s “Black-ish” and NBC’s “Kenan.” Smith is also under an overall deal at Universal Television. Executive producers of the project include Ruffin, Hagel, Smith and Olivia Morris. Universal Television is the studio. NBC is currently working on one other comedy pilot: “St. Denis Medical,” a mockumentary from “Superstore” and “American Auto” team Justin Spitzer, Eric Ledgin and Simon Heuer. The drama pilots in the works at NBC are “Murder by the Book” from “Good Girls” team Retta and Jenna Bans as well as “Wolf” from “Riverdale” team Michael Grassi and Greg Berlanti and starring Andy Serkis.

Pedowitz has revived his shingle, Pine Street Entertainment, which is represented by CAA as part of the arrangement. Pedowitz announced his departure from The CW in October, following Nexstar Media Group’s acquisition of the network from its previous joint operators CBS and Warner Bros. (Those two entities maintain minority stakes in The CW, but Nexstar is now the majority owner and operator.) In reviving Pine Street Entertainment, Pedowitz is bringing back his independent production company that produced CBS’ “The Crazy Ones” (starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Robin Williams), as well as a number of development projects.

Joe Otterson TV Reporter Zachary Quinto has been cast in the lead role of the NBC drama pilot “Wolf,” Variety has learned. The project was first ordered to pilot at the broadcaster back in January. It is inspired by the books “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat” and “An Anthropologist on Mars” by Oliver Sacks. Per the official logline, “Wolf” will follow “a revolutionary, larger-than-life neurologist (Quinto) and his team of interns as they explore the last great frontier, the human mind, while also grappling with their own relationships and mental health.” Quinto’s character is named Dr. Oliver Wolf. He is further described as “head of neurology at Bronx General and an obsessive genius. He’s drawn to people that society has deemed “other” and helps them find hope and purpose. He embraces differences rather than suppressing them.”

CBS has handed a pilot order to JumpStart, a multi-camera comedy based on Robb Armstrong’s long-running comic strip. Wayne Conley (The Best Man) penned the TV adaptation. The project, from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, Wendy Trilling’s TrillTV and CBS Studios, was among the first CBS buys for the 2023-24 season made last June. The order caps an almost decade-long journey for Kapital to adapt JumpStart for TV.
