Samuel West, who stars in All Creatures Great and Small, has opened up about a tearful moment on the show, which saw his on-screen brother leave. During the 2022 Christmas special, Siegfried Farnon found out his brother Tristan, played by Callum Woodhouse, was leaving to join the war effort.
Despite trying to convince him to stay, Tristan decided to leave. Actor Samuel shared his feelings about this emotional scene and how much he loves the character of Siegfried: "He isn't quite as old or as stuck in the mud as he thinks he is, and there are people around him, principally Mrs Hall and Tristan, who are constantly reinventing his idea of what people are.And watching somebody who thought they were slightly frozen and blocked thaw in moments of warmth, is, I think, a real pleasure." He added Siegfried had a difficult relationship with his father, which is why he is so protective of Tristan: "Siegfried and Tristan's father was not a giving man, and I'm absolutely certain that neither of Siegfried's parents ever told him they loved him, although he may have felt it." The Express reports Samuel admitted to Masterpiece that when it was time for Tristan star Callum to leave the Channel 5 show, he couldn't stop crying.
He confessed: "I cry at everything. I'm hopeless.
Whenever they say, 'When did you last cry and why?' I'm like, '20 minutes ago.' "To say something about the way Cal played that scene is that two people trying not to cry is always much more moving." The scene in question saw Tristan deliver a touching speech in tribute to his brother Siegfried as he said: "Christmas is a time for family, those that are here and especially those who are not. All of us are missing someone.
